First off almost every protagonist seems to have the main motivation of "protecting" someone or something. Sometimes it's a love interest but often it's much more generalized. A character will want to protect people or places in general. I'd even go so far as to say that "protection" seems to be the most prevalent motivation for a character to do anything.
